Verdi Requiem

A requiem is popularly known as “a mass for the dead”; evidently, this means that this is a mass service that is dedicated to those who have lived out their lives in our world and have by now passed away. Of course, a requiem is also used to describe any musical composition that is used for a requiem mass, or any mass service that aims to pray for the souls of the dearly departed in order to save them from the sins of their past. Of course, many a composer has been asked during his lifetime to compose a requiem, while others chose to compose a requiem of their own. The Verdi Requiem (also known as Messa de Requiem by Verdi or the Manzoni Requiem) was famously written by Verdi for Alessandro Manzoni, a humanist and writer – Verdi had nothing but great respect for the man. First performed on the twenty-second of May 1874, the Verdi Requiem proved itself to be one of the most exquisite works of the composer.
